As a speaker I get lots of opportunities to travel around the world and the United States. Recently I traveled to the mid-West I stayed at a well-known hotel. Since I live in California I am used to a multicultural environment but in the mid-West area I was the only Asian-American in the community.
Obviously I was a foreigner. I felt like people were looking at me wherever I went: gas stations, restaurants, stores, etc. I could have pretended that I just came from another country since I have an accent and people kept on asking me what country I came from, but I didn’t.
Traveling is so common nowadays and it is very easy for you to get customers from other countries. If you are in the hotel business the challenge is how do you get them to come back to your hotel?
Here are five tips to attract multicultural customers to your hotel:
1. Help them fill out the hotel forms. When the line is long kindly ask them to come to the other end of the counter and someone will help them fill out the forms.
2. Introduce them to the Concierge or the special person who can help them with any questions they might have including packaged tours, renting cars, or where to buy a bandage.
3. When you have a group event ask the group leader what comfort foods they prefer. Then do your best to accommodate them. Even one dish in your menu will make you a superstar hotel.
4. If the group speaks a different language make sure you have something printed in their language welcoming them. Make sure the text is not printed upside down. Have someone who speaks the language check it for you.
5. Print out a list of local restaurants in advance. If there is an ethnic restaurant they like they will love your hotel and come back again.
